Jobs in Cloud Computing

Want to get ahead in the cloud? Docker and DevOps skills are what you need.

According to recent IT Jobs Watch figures, job roles involving container technology Docker have risen 317 places to number two in the 500 most sought after IT skills. With this in mind, recent research from Rackspace has shown a similar spike in Docker and DevOps-related skills in the UK technology industry.

The future of SEO: Apple vs. Google

Over the past few years, many top startups have elected to go mobile first and build app only experiences. While some have had success, mobile first companies such as Uber and Hotel Tonight have missed out on the large opportunity of SEO. Soon, pages within an app will be as easy to search for as pages on a website, and mobile-only companies will be able to compete directly with websites via search.

Designing Web Interfaces For Kids

Kids spend a lot of time online, and their cognitive and physical limitations present many challenges to them when they do so. Pair that with poorly designed content and dark patterns, and you have a bad mix.

The Hamburger Menu doesn’t work

It’s called a “hamburger” because it it looks roughly like a bun-meat-bun sandwich. Others have insisted that it looks much more like a triple hot-dog, but they’ve thus far been unsuccessful in winning the public’s hearts and minds. The idea behind the hamburger menu is that you can use it to hide site navigation on smaller screens, showing it only when the user clicks the icon instead of always showing it (which was the previous norm).

AlwaysOnPC and VirtualBrowser for Firefox has a solution for an interchangeable tablet to desktop ecosystem running Flash and Java on the iPad and iPhone.

A shiny new iPad at $499 or an expensive (and yes, shiny) new PC or Mac at $1000 dollars? You do the math. The price of consumer Personal Computers and Tablets is the deciding force behind what type of machine you will purchase. Although the “Overall shipments of tablets and 2-in-1 devices fell to 47.1 million in the quarter, a 5.9 percent decline from the same quarter a year ago according to preliminary research data, IDC said.”  - via TechCrunch. The demand for tablets is still significant at 47.1 million shipments. Yet many consumers are still left with the impression that a tablet can replace a PC.

How does AlwaysOnPC and VirtualBrowser for Firefox solve this issue?

In 2010 we saw the future (but more importantly the need) and came up with our own virtual PC cloud solution. Instead of having users connect remotely to a work server and launch your own windows desktop; we’ve given you the ability to have your own powerful Desktop PC solution that is hosted by our servers and maintained by us. In turn you can work from anywhere without worrying about if the connection to your work computer/server is up and running. The price is also a good deal at $8.99 for the year.

Since then there have been many attempts to create Virtual Cloud Desktops. Some have failed, others well the solution is still not quite as thought out. The facts are pretty clear With 64% of the average American household between the ages of 12 to 64 owning a tablet – Source Tabtimes.com  the need for a mobile tablet solution is already here. There are other competitors in this space that are attempting to “solve” this issue. Take a look at Paperspace, this is short description via TechCrunch on what Paperspace is trying to do, “Paperspace is different because it’s aiming to wrap up a similar service in terms of accessing a remote, cloud computer, but offering it through an easy-to-use console where everyday consumers can just click a button to log into their upgraded, more powerful remote machine.”

The caveat with Paperspace is the fact that you still have to buy a hockey pucked shaped disk that houses a small computer to connect to the machine. This does nothing to solve the portability issue and at $50 dollars is a no go for many consumers. There are countless other attempting to create a space for themselves in this market but for the time being we offer a great solution to the 64% of iPad owners looking for a person pc as an in between when carrying your laptop isn’t an option.

The Future of a “Post PC” World

There was an interesting article posted by tech media site The Verge on August 9, 2015. The title staunchly put it “There’s no such thing as post-PC” you can read more about it here. This article laid out the ground work as to how consumers and professionals use tablets and PC’s interchangeably with the claim that “You use your smartphone as much as your laptop because it’s just another PC”.

If you think about it the argument could be held as true. Think about how you use your computer, tablet and mobile device? Do you use your tablet as a consumption device to browse websites, watch videos, send emails? What we are trying to continue to provide is the ability to access a virtual desktop from this device as an in between computer for when you don’t have access to your regular desktop.

We are just providing another flavor of Personal Computing to allow you to work uninterrupted.

App Updates for all Virtual Browser Products: Virtual Browser for Chrome, Virtual Browser for Firefox and Private Anonymous Browser for iPad and iPhone.

Santa Barbara, CA — Xform Computing Inc., a leader in open-source based cloud-streaming apps for mobile devices, is excited to announce an update to our existing lineup of iOS apps. This app update (Versions 2.0.7, 2.0.5 and 1.0.3) fixes a bug issue that was prompting many users to “Recover” their premium accounts even if they had already upgraded. If a user choose the yes option to recover they could get stuck in a loop or they would be prompted to “Recover” again if they closed the application out.

This newest update fixes that bug issue for all Virtual Browser products and will allow users to continue to seamlessly use the Premium features with an updated in-app purchase model.

All our Virtual Browser products run Flash, Java as well as the ability to use Firefox Add-Ons (Virtual Browser for Firefox only) Chrome web apps and Extensions with both our Virtual Chrome and Private Anonymous Browser apps. Private Anonymous Browser runs in a private incognito tab that securely protects your privacy and data. All mobile sessions are SSH encrypted end to end.

Virtual Browser for Firefox ranks #3 (Appfigures.com data August 14, 2014) in paid Business apps and is the only app to run the real Mozilla Firefox browser with “desktop class” features like Java, Flash, Firefox Add-Ons, Extension and much more.

Virtual Browser for Chrome ranks #20 in the Utilities category on the AppStore with it also in the top 25 for Top Grossing apps in that category (Appfigures.com data on August 14, 2014).

“Oh my GAWD! I have to create some content for our brand!”

Creating good content for your brand can be a somewhat difficult endeavor. You may be inclined to cut and paste articles on social media that have some relevancy to what you do, but are you really doing the best possible job at curating content for your brand experience?

There has been a seismic shift in the way consumers interact with brands. The traditional way has been to watch television and consume content by targeting your product during your demographics peak viewing hours. This is what is typically called a Nielsen Rating. Many traditional media outlets like print newspaper and television newscast live and die by these ratings. Nielsen has a whole scientific way of getting results per viewership and there is a great blog post on it here.

This is not a very efficient way of gaining traction with your brand. It’s a very low latency/low interaction method that does not fit the digital media landscape. Many big brands are struggling with this as the rules are changing daily. A perfect example of this are companies like JC Penny who felt they had to change in order to gain a broader audience and hired former Apple Retail Executive Ron Johnson to be the company CEO in November 2011. (He has since been ousted.) JC Penny was trying to adapt its long and storied history into a hip name brand, which did not resonate with its consumer base and the content marketing efforts in online media were not very well executed.

This brings us back to the idea of developing good content marketing for your brand. There is a great post I read by Noah Brier, Co-Founder and CEO of Percolate an online content marketing company founded in 2008, on ReCode which you can read here. In this article Noah states “I would simplify things even further to say that content marketing is nothing more than brands using content to communicate with audiences.”

Content Marketing Poster

So how do you develop good content? The key is to look at the tools you already use in your daily marketing efforts. What kinds of interactions are you having with users on your Facebook page? What types of tweets are your followers on Twitter most interested in? Twitter just released their analytics tools at analytics.twitter.com. Use this to find out what your users actually want? Here is a quick snapshot of Xform Computing’s analytics page.

Xform Twitter Analytics

As you can see most of our followers are interested in Music, Technology and Tech News. So in order for us to create good content marketing we have to position or post and tweets to cater to those tastes. We’ve developed several YouTube channels focusing on features in our line-up of products. Some videos are general while others get more specific. Our product is not trying to “go viral” as many brands try to do and fail miserably at. What we want to tie into our content marketing is steady user growth and our line graph to have a steady up tick of user acquisition.

There are some simple rules to follow:

  1. First and foremost find your voice! Find out what your brand/product is about and curate it towards users that will find a use for it.
  2. Tell a story. Consumers do not want stats and numbers. They want to know how this will impact their life and will they have any future use for it. (Think relevancy!)
  3. Create content that is human. Create content that has real value.
  4. Find the the channels where your audience is and distribute your content there.
By no means is this an easy task, but if you outline a plan relevant to your brand you may find that a more dialed in approach may be what works best for you. Plus your marketing budget will be no more worse for wear.

Starting today, we’re going to begin posting a new series of videos on our Virtual Browser for Chrome channel, Virtual Browser for Firefox channel and our AlwaysOnPC channels on YouTube.

Many of these videos are going to be based on user feedback that we get daily on our community forums, desk.com ticketing system as well as Facebook, Twitter and of course good old fashioned email. If you want a certain feature on Virtual Chrome, Virtual Firefox or AlwaysOnPC explained let us know and we’ll make a video about it!

It’s sometimes hard to figure out how to use a new app when you get used to the way an iOS app functions. Most applications are of course based on the notion of touch interfaces, but what about streaming mobile apps like ours that can offer various ways to use an app? It is okay to be able to use a an app in different ways and not get stuck with one method of operation. This really builds on essential skills because wether your on iOS, Android or Kindle each operating system functions and behaves differently.

That’s why were working on this new series to act a community resource of our products. We also want to encourage users to post their own videos to help others.

If you ever run into an issue with our products let us know.

Watch the video, comment and share!

One of the many qualms of technology is the fact that there may be an issue that never gets resolved. This sometimes happens with larger companies where the amount of users outweighs the amount of support personal available to solve these issues. It can be a very frustrating experience. You can go about searching for answers but some community forums are as useful as sour milk.

Luckily though there is always an answer that someone will come across and share.

Google Search has recently been redirecting many users to Google Germany (google.de) this has cause widespread frustration and millions of search queries like “how to fix google defaulting to german” we got complaints from our users if we were having server problems? We couldn’t seem to figure out what the issue was? It was even redirecting YouTube to YouTube.de….strange.

The fix is pretty simple and one that was found on a google forum posted by a community member. Just type in google.com/ncr and you should be taken to the standard U.S. version of google search.

No need to thank us. Thank the folks who found the solution to this.

Happy searching!
